Tribunal: Peter Obi's Claim That A Candidate Must Receive 25% Votes In The FCT Is False And Absurd

In a recent development reported by The Punch newspaper, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja has delivered its verdict on the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 presidential election against Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was widely acknowledged as winner of the election. The tribunal, after thorough examination, concluded that the petition was largely built on rhetorical arguments and subsequently dismissed all claims presented.

The primary assertion in the petition, which insisted that a candidate must secure 25% of the total votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be declared the winner, was specifically criticized by Justice Haruna Tsammani, who presided over the panel of judges, as being false and absurd.

The chief judge stated:

“The LP lawyer’s argument that the second respondent shouldn’t have been declared the winner because he didn’t receive a score of 25% in the FCT is false and completely absurd.”

Apart from the contentions raised by the LP and Peter Obi in their petition, other issues, such as Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eligibility to run for office in light of a forfeiture case in the United States of America and the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in promptly transmitting results to the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV), were also discussed during the proceedings.
