Other Africans Said They Know Who Won Our Election So We Can't Speak To Them On Democracy – Chris Nwokobia

Chris Nwokobia, a member of the Labour Party and public affairs analyst, has spoken out to urge African leaders to preserve the credibility of the election process by which they come to power.

If Nigeria hasn’t given signals that democracy is what we practise, Mr Nwokobia, who featured in an interview on Arise TV today, argues, it will be tough to convince other West African countries to embrace democracy.

In his own words as seen on Arise TV….

It appears that we are being pushed towards a war with Niger. You don’t have to put Nigériens under duress to ask them to do the right thing if the president was elected through a legitimate procedure. You need only board the president’s plane, fly to Niger, and bargain with the locals there. Nigériens won’t listen to you if they don’t believe you can change the country for the better because of your background. It may or may not be true, but I’ve heard people from Burkina Faso and other African countries claim that they already know who won our election and that we have nothing to teach them about democracy.

That’s why I believe African leaders should work to ensure that they gain power in legitimate ways. The leaders of Africa need to make sure that democracy is truly rule “by the people, and for the people,” as Abraham Lincoln put it. And when we properly dish and provide service to the people, we will emerge not only as leaders in West Africa and the Sahel, but as leaders across all of Africa. As a nation, we enjoy the highest level of prestige on this continent.
