Kano Tribunal reserves judgment in petition challenging Gov Yusuf’s election.

The Kano State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday reserved judgment in a petition filed by the All Progressive Congress(APC) challenging the victory of Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the APC is challenging INEC for declaring Kabir-Yusuf of the NNPP as winner of the election that was conducted on March 18, 2023.Respondents in the petition are :INEC, Kabir-Yusuf and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The three-member panel led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, said that the tribunal would communicate the date for the judgment after all parties had adopted their final written addresses.

“I am honoured and privileged that this is my first assignment as the Chairman of a Tribunal and I prayed to God to guide me uphold the intergrity of my job.

“We will be fair. Be rest assured that we will read what the law says and we will read it to the best of our knowledge” Akintan-Osadebay said

Earlier, Counsel to the APC, Offiong Offiong SAN, in adopting his final written addresses dated July 31, Aug.6, Aug. 7, and Aug.8, replied on points of law.

Peter Obi leads mega LP rally for LG election in Edo

Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) on Monday in Benin City, led a mega rally for the party ahead of the September 2 local government area election in Edo State.Addressing the teeming party members and supporters who trooped out for the event, Obi described the local government area system as “where development is domiciled”.

“Local government is the closest to the people and it is supposed to be the root of ensuring development for the people.

“The three most critical areas of development are health, education and poverty eradication and they are responsibilities of the local government.

“So, for the system to work, for a country to develop well, it is the local government, as everything that has to do with development is domiciled in the local government.

Niger: ECOWAS rejects junta’s 3-year transition plan

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has rejected the three-year transition plan proposed by Niger Republic’s military junta.

It will be recalled that the coup leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, had at a meeting with ECOWAS delegation, led by General Abadulsalami Abubakar, retd, in Niamey on Saturday, promised the military government would return Niger Republic to democracy in three years.

Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, told BBC in an interview, yesterday, that the proposal was unacceptable to ECOWAS, setting the ground for a military operation.

Meanwhile, thousands of Nigeriens flooded the streets yesterday declaring support for the military junta.

Their demonstration came against the backdrop of ECOWAS’ insistence on invading the country to rout out coupists should diplomacy fail to restore ousted President Mohamed Bazoum to power.

The rally came on a day an official of the government in Niger said talks between the ECOWAS delegation, led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, retd and the junta achieved very little result.

Justice Minister Fagbemi assumes office, warns staff against running afoul of law.

The new Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkami Fagbemi, SAN, issued on Monday evening a warning to the generality of workers of the Federal Ministry of Justice to not run afoul of any law in the discharge of their statutory duties.

The senior lawyer specifically challenged the management and staff of the ministry to rededicate themselves to service for the progress of Nigeria.

Fagbemi was inaugurated on Monday as a member of the federal cabinet by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu along with 44 others at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He spoke with the workers when he took over as Nigeria’s 24th Attorney General.

While describing the ministry as strategic to the Nigerian project, Fagbemi called on the staff to follow ethics and rules in anything they do so as not to run afoul of the law.
