Governor Obaseki Opens Up On The Alleged Rift Between Him And His Deputy, Shaibu

According to Vanguard, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has opened up about the crisis between him and comrade Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor.

Speaking to elders and party leaders at a weekend meeting in Etsako,Edo North, Governor Obaseki said the action of his deputy was a coup and an attempt to remove him by force.

Are you saying that you are upset because of the drama going on between you and your deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu?

I would be lying if I told you that what happened in the last few weeks was not a shock to me because I never expected that we would be in this situation again. You have heard my MP say many times that he sent me to PDP, and you know we had problems integrating with the PDP platform as you have with any marriage. But since we started, because of my background, I said, Look, you have to learn to give people responsibility. Because institution building is important, individuals do not come and go, but institutions do. That is why, in everything we do, I am calling the Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), and saying I will do it tomorrow anyway. If I can’t do something, I go ahead and do it. When I’m on vacation, I say I’ll hand over the reigns to you.

The first time he called me was when I was on vacation and said, “What am I doing, sir? I said, “You are responsible; make your own mistake; when I come, I will correct it. Being an individual, God forbid, if I do not return from this trip, Edo will not continue. This power is not mine, God. Put me there.
