Muhammadu Sanusi ll, Former Emir Of Kano Meets Abdourahamane Tchiani, Niger Republic Coup Leader

The 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has met with the military junta on Wednesday in Niamey in what looks to be a strong move to appease the Niger Republic coup leaders. According to INDEPENDENT, the discussion in Niamey, the country’s capital, focused on the way out of the military junta’s takeover of power and the political crisis in Niger Republic.

The monarch’s meeting with the coup leader of Niger Republic came ahead of a meeting of the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) scheduled for Thursday, following the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum issued to the coup plotters to return power to the ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

After seizing control on July 26 and holding President Bazoum captive, the ECOWAS, under the leadership of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, gave the coup plotters in Niger, commanded by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, seven days to restore Bazoom’s rule or face military action.

While the Nigerian government shut off the nation’s energy supply, the ECOWAS also imposed penalties on Niger, including a halt to all financial activities and the freezing of its national assets. The one-week ultimatum ended on Sunday, but Niger’s military leaders stayed steadfast, cutting connections with Nigeria, France, and other nations while threatening that any military action against them would amount to a full-fledged war.
