Arise TV Town Hall Meeting: Peter Obi’s Correct, Incorrect Claims – Factcheckers’ Coalition

The Presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi has been accused of giving a false statistics about Nigeria total health budget on the last six years.

Peter Obi, while featuring on Arise Television Town Hall Meeting on Sunday claimed that Nigeria’s total health budget in the last six years is N2 trillion, 250 billion.

However, The Nigeria Factcheckers’ Coalition (NFC) has stated that this is incorrect.

According to the company, “a review of Nigeria’s health budget in the last six years, between 2017-2022 shows that the federal government allocated 2.7 trillion naira to the health sector. However, If Mr Obi meant between 2016 to 2021, like he referenced earlier, Nigeria’s health budget stands at 2.3 trillion naira.”

However, NFC said Peter Obi was correct in his claim that Nigeria’s average life expectancy is 55 years and global average, 72.9 years.

“Labour Party’s presidential candidate, @PeterObi, claimed that Nigeria’s average life expectancy is 55 years and global average, 72.9 years.”

The Nigeria Factcheckers’ Coalition (NFC) participated in the Arise News presidential town hall meeting on Sunday, November 13, 2022.

NFC comprises leading Nigerian newsrooms and think-tank groups such as TheCable, Africa Check, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), Daily Trust, Digital Africa Research Lab, Dubawa, FactCheckhub, FactsMatterNG, International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), Premium Times, and The Insight.
