The camps of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar; and that of President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, clashed over the watermark on the copy of the judgment of the Presidential Elections Petition Court which went viral on Friday.

The viral copy of the Certified True Copy of the court’s judgment had the watermark of the Tinubu Presidential Legal Team on it, with commentators, especially social media users, suggesting a sinister motive.

The PEPC had on Wednesday delivered a 12-hour judgment on the appeals arising from the presidential election, upholding the election of the President who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Atiku and Peter Obi of the Labour Party had rejected the court’s judgment, vowing to approach the Supreme Court.

Edo LG Election Was A Sham–Imuse

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Col David Imuse (retd.), tells ADEYINKA ADEDIPE the party’s grievances about the local government election held in the state last week.

How would you describe the conduct of the LG election?

What was purported to be an election or selection process turned out to be nothing more than a sham, leaving Edo State citizens severely disillusioned and questioning the integrity of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission. EDSIEC officials refused to perform their duties and were conspicuously absent at majority of the polling units. And in those places where they made an appearance, ballot papers were inadequate, like 100 ballot papers per unit irrespective of the number of registered voters in those units, and there were no result sheets.

The Obi/Atiku Vs Tinubu Case

I will take the time to analyse the just-delivered judgment of the court of appeal in Obi /Atiku vs Tinubu presidential election petition subsequently but before then, this is what I need you to know about not just election petitions but every other court proceeding in general.

As a politician, try as much as possible to win the election and for you to be declared elected or returned elected. The reason for this is that there is a higher chance of the court affirming your election than sacking you. In fact, in all the presidential election petition cases that have ever taken place in Nigeria since 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy, the court has never sacked an elected president, rather the court always affirmed their election.
