Crisis Looms As Akpabio Creates Committees

There is a looming crisis in the upper legislative chamber of the National Assembly as Senate President Godswill Akpabio reportedly amended the Senate standing rules but in flagrant violation of Order 109 of Senate Rules.

SaharaReporters gathered that the Senate President in connivance with the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele amended the Standing Rules on Saturday night to include the creation of new committees without 72 members present, representing (2/3) majority in the chamber.

SaharaReporters gathered that some Senators are threatening to take drastic actions over the issue, decrying the impunity of his flagrant violation of paragraphs 4 and 5 of Order 109 of Senate Rules.

An insider source told SaharaReporters that Senate Leader, Bamidele, APC, from Ekiti State introduced the amendment to the Senate Rules on Saturday at about 7:30 pm in violation of the amendment rules.

Igbos In Niger Republic Protest Against Proposed Military Action By Tinubu

Nigerians of Southeast extraction who live in the Niger Republic have protested against the proposed military action against coup leaders in Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

The ECOWAS had given the Niger coup plotters led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, seven days to return power to President Mohammed Bazoom or face military action.

ECOWAS has also imposed sanctions on Niger, including halting all financial transactions and freezing its national assets while the Nigerian government has cut off electricity supply to the country

Subsidy Removal: Lagos LG reduces staff workdays to three

Agege Local Government Area, LGA, of Lagos State on Tuesday, announced a reduction of its working days to three, to help ameliorate the economic hardship being faced by workers.

The council also lowered levies paid by traders and residents of the area.

The Council Chairman, Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi, made the declarations in a statement in Agege.These reductions became imperative in view of the effect of subsidy withdrawal by the Federal Government on residents of the area,”

“Our staff are not spared of the prevailing economic hardship brought about by oil subsidy removal by the government.

“While the subsidy regime removal is welcomed as it was only benefitting few elites and smugglers at the expense of the critical sectors of the economy and the common man.

“The council leadership is not unmindful of the unintended consequences it foisted on our staff and residents.

Ministerial List: Reps congratulate Tunji-Ojo, Sununu.

The House of Representatives has congratulated two members of the 10th House who were screened and confirmed as minister-designate.

The House, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Deputy Spokesperson, Philip Agbese, congratulated Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Tanko Sununu for scaling the confirmation hearing.

It would be recalled that the Senate cleared Sununu, Olubunmi-Ojo and 43 others. Three nominees of the president failed to scale through, they include Nasir el-Rufai, Stella Okotete and Abubakar Danladi.“

We felicitate with Honourable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (Akoko Northeast/West Federal Constituency) and Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu (Yauri/ Shanga/ Ngaski Federal Constituency) on their well-deserved appointment,” the statement reads.

The House also commended a former Deputy Chief Whip of the House, Nkiruka Onyejiocha for scaling the confirmation process.

“We also congratulate the Chief Whip of the 9th House of Representatives of the National Assembly, Honourable Nkiruka Onyejiocha,” Agbese said
