Reactions As Vice President Shettima Says Subsidy Removal Has Reduced Carbon Emissions In Nigeria

Amidst the ongoing struggles faced by Nigerians due to the high cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) nationwide, Vice President Kashim Shettima’s recent statement has ignited a wave of responses. Shettima maintained that the elimination of fuel subsidy has contributed to decreasing carbon emissions in Nigeria.

According to a report from THE PUNCH on its verified Twitter account, Shettima made this statement during a one-day workshop organized by the National Council on Climate Change. In his keynote address, the Vice President, represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Senator Ibrahim Hassan, highlighted that by discontinuing petrol subsidy, Nigeria has taken steps toward achieving its climate control targets.

“At the inception of this administration, President Bola Tinubu took a bold step to terminate petrol subsidy. Preliminary analysis by the National Council on Climate Change concerning the collateral benefits of removing fuel subsidy indicates that there’s been roughly a 30 percent drop in daily fuel consumption, equivalent to about 20 million liters, which translates to an estimated 42,800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.”

Interestingly, Shettima’s remarks have sparked varied reactions across social media platforms, with individuals expressing a range of opinions in the comments section.

While some individuals agreed with the Vice President’s assertion, others criticized the rationale behind linking the reduction of carbon emissions to the removal of fuel subsidy. Below are some of the reactions from Nigerians:
