Sit-at-home: Disruption of business in South East is criminal activity, there is a better way – Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has condemned the sit-in by a faction of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing it as a criminal activity that causes suffering to innocent people.

In a series of tweets, Obi called for a more strategic approach to end the killings in South East, Benue and Plateau states.

He said it is unacceptable that hundreds of innocent lives continue to be needlessly wasted in Nigeria due to communal clashes, bandits and kidnapping activities.

“The growing insecurity in the country leading to senseless bloodshed especially in the north-central part of the country and the continued disruption of commercial and social activities in the south-east are becoming very worrisome,” Obi said.

Also worrisome is the continued disruption of commercial and social activities in the South-East due to the so-called Sit-at-Home directive allegedly issued by the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), even though IPOB has publicly denied issuing such a directive.

“What is happening in the South-East is therefore basically a criminal activity that has to be stopped midway, with all hands on deck, both the security agencies and the people.”

The President of the European Parliament commended the South-East governors for their renewed efforts to restore peace, but said there is a need to be more strategic and intelligence-led in how we “reduce the suffering of innocent people”.

“We as a people, through our various governments, must increase our value for human life in the way and manner we respond to issues that affect lives,” Obi said.

He therefore calls on key stakeholders in these areas, traditional leaders, Christians and Muslims, to continue to promote peace among their people by the way they conduct themselves.

On Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condemned the recent shootings in Mangu council in Plateau State and parts of Benue State and called for an end to the cycle of violence in the country.
