There Should Be Absolute Silence In Court When A Judgement Is Being Read – Onueze Okocha

A former president of the Nigeria Bar Association, Onueze Okocha, has stated that the court room should be absolutely silent when judges or justices are reading the judgement in a court room. He conceded that the justices of the presidential election tribunal were right to condemn the actions of an APC lawyer who interrupted the judgement of the presidential election tribunal.

He said in an interview with TVC , “it is unheard of, indeed there should be silence in courts when a judgement is being read. Most time if you try to enter a court while the judgement is being read, you are prevented. The police orderlies will stand by the entrance door of the court to prevent anybody from entering the court.

But here was an incident that happened in court that a lawyer at the bar will stand up and say something to interrupt the judgement and I think the justices, particularly the presiding justice who was reading the judgement was very correct to call him to order.

So I think that everybody should learn that the atmosphere of the court indicates sobriety and solemnity particularly when a judgement is being read. When a judge is talking, even ordinarily addressing a counsel or addressing the court, nobody should interrupt the judge. That is what we were thought and that is what we practice.”
