Presidential Tribunal: Reactions Trail Shehu Sani's Tweet Amid Ongoing Debate On 25% FCT Votes

The ongoing debate between Nigeria’s major political parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – at the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has sparked reactions to a social media post by civil rights activist Shehu Sani. The parties are disputing the interpretation of the Constitutional provision requiring twenty-five percent of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for a presidential candidate to be declared winner.

In a short tweet on Monday, Sani, a PDP chieftain and former Kaduna lawmaker, insisted on the clarity of the wording used in the law to distinguish Abuja from other states. He pointed out the distinction created between two different foods by using the word ‘and’, analogizing it to the Constitutional language.

As expected, Sani’s tweet garnered numerous reactions from Nigerians across the political spectrum. Some agreed with his analogy about the importance of ‘and’ in distinguishing between things. They felt he made a valid linguistic argument about Constitutional interpretation.

However, others disagreed with Sani’s point. They argued the context and intent behind the Constitutional language matters more than focusing on one connecting word. Some accused him of biased reasoning to suit his party’s position in the election dispute.
