Obaseki, Shaibu rift: Shaibu is the deputy Governor of Edo State, not Obaseki’s deputy- Sumner Sambo

Arise TV’s politics editor, Sumner Sambo has said the feud between Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu will be a problem once it starts affecting governance in the state.

Sambo’s comments is coming after the media team of the deputy Governor was prevented from gaining entrance into a colloquium to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum, held in Benin City. Following that incident, the Edo State government issued a statement disbanding the media team attached to the office of the deputy Governor.

Reacting to this on Arise TV, Sambo said, “there should be a civil way of resolving this issue because once it’s starts affecting governance, there will be a problem. And I don’t know why the security officials would want to stop a deputy Governor from performing his functions. Governor Obaseki must understand the constitutional role of the Governor and that of the deputy Governor. The deputy Governor is the deputy Governor of Edo State, not the deputy Governor of Governor Obaseki.

So it’s very clear that this was a state event, and if the Governor was there, there was no reason why the deputy Governor should be absent.”
