Niger’s junta refuses entry to negotiators, as Mali, Burkina Faso write UN

The ECOWAS delegation was trying to negotiate with the military junta in Niger, which took power in a coup last year. However, the military junta refused to allow the delegation to enter the country, saying that they did not have the authority to do so.

The delegation was made up of senior officials from several ECOWAS countries, including Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria.

They had been planning to hold talks with the junta about a possible return to democracy in Niger. The refusal to allow the delegation to enter has been seen as a major setback in efforts to resolve the political crisis in Niger. The country has been in a state of turmoil since the military took power in February of last year.

The military junta has been accused of human rights abuses and of trying to consolidate power by silencing political opponents and the press.

The ECOWAS delegation was hoping to encourage the junta to hold free and fair elections and to restore democracy in the country.
