Niger War: How Can You Fight With Your Neighbour & Expect To Live In Peace? – Prof Usman Yusuf

ECOWAS Chairman, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has opted for a military intervention to reinstate democracy in Niger following the country’s recent encounter with a military revolution. This situation arose when General Tchiani resisted relinquishing control to civilian authorities.

Former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, has raised concerns about President Tinubu’s actions, suggesting that he is following a script influenced by Western nations in response to the country’s developments. Prof. Yusuf, speaking to the Punch paper, noted that due to Tinubu’s ongoing legal battle at the tribunal, he has been seeking avenues for legitimacy. Despite the challenges he’s facing, he emphasized that Tinubu seems determined to achieve a favorable outcome over his opponents in the western part of the country. However, Prof. Yusuf is of the opinion that Nigeria shouldn’t involve itself in the affairs of the Niger Junta.

In Prof. Yusuf’s words, “Nigeria’s financial situation is dire; we’re resorting to borrowing just to cover salaries. The question is, who will finance all of this? President Tinubu’s pursuit of legitimacy appears to be driving his alignment with Western interests, a move that Prof. Yusuf deems unnecessary. He questions the feasibility of engaging in conflicts with neighboring countries while expecting to maintain peaceful relations.”
