Niger Crisis: PDP Governors knock Tinubu, reject military option

In the aftermath of the military coup in the Niger Republic, Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged President Bola Tinubu to avoid any potential armed conflict with the neighboring country.

According to Vanguard , this advice came during a crucial meeting held between the PDP Governors Forum, the party’ s Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other key stakeholders.

The Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, spoke passionately as he read the communique issued at the end of the meeting. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy and peaceful dialogue as the preferred approach to handling the delicate situation with Niger Republic.

The Nigerian leaders expressed their desire to maintain cordial relations with their neighboring country and stressed the need for collaboration in addressing common regional challenges.

” The meeting advised the President, Commander in Chief and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria not to go into any form of war with the Republic of Niger over the recent military coup in the country, rather all tools of dialogue and diplomacy should be further employed” , Governor Mohammed said.

He further reiterated that all tools of dialogue and diplomacy should be deployed to foster understanding and resolution between the two nations. The PDP Governors Forum believes that armed conflict would not only escalate tensions in the region but also disrupt the stability and progress both countries have been striving to achieve.

They expressed their unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles and fostering peace, not just within Nigeria but also in the broader West African region.

The military coup in the Niger Republic has raised concerns among neighboring countries, including Nigeria, given the shared borders and interdependencies between nations in the region. Nigeria, being one of the leading economic powerhouses in Africa, plays a significant role in ensuring regional peace and stability.
