Reactions as House Of Reps Member Was Reportedly Sent Out Of Chamber House For Dressing Improperly

During a session in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, a tense moment arose due to the attire of one of the representatives. The lawmaker, whose identity remains unknown, entered the plenary towards the end of the day’s proceedings and sat in a section of the chamber that was used as an alternate space by members.

However, despite being dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, the lawmaker was asked to leave the chamber as their attire did not conform to the expected dress code for lawmakers during sessions. House regulations state that members are required to wear a suit and tie or traditional attire with a matching cap. The individual in question did not meet the requirements for either option.

Honourable Billy Osaweru (APC, Edo) raised a point of order, drawing attention to the improperly dressed member and pointing out that it violated the House’s dress code. He addressed the Speaker of the House, saying, “Mr. Speaker, our rules stipulate that those attending plenary are required to dress appropriately. If you go to the upper level of the chamber, Mr. Speaker, you’ll see a member there who is dressed in jeans and a t-shirt.”

However, before Osaweru could fully address the point of order, the member in question stood up and left the chamber. The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, then announced that the “point of order was complied with.”

It is essential for lawmakers to adhere to dress codes in legislative chambers as it reflects the decorum and professionalism of the institution
