Minister of Culture Hannatu Musawa denies NYSC status statement

Hannatu Musawa, the minister of art, culture, and the creative economy has renounced a comment that she allegedly made in response to the debate about her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) status.

A statement supposedly made by her, which claimed that she had not breached any laws by holding a ministerial position and participating in the national service at the same time, was released in some media on Sunday.

According to the Premium Times, in a speech by Suleiman Haruna, the Deputy Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, she dissociated herself from such content.

“A newly circulated piece has caught the eye of the Minister regarding the present NYSC controversy; the article incorrectly links her to it.”

“For clarity, she confirms that she has not made any official statements about the aforementioned issue and respectfully requests that people exercise caution when relying on unreliable information.

When Ms. Musawa was unable to present senators with proof of her national service during the screening process for an appointment for which she was the previous president’s nominee, the debate surrounding her NYSC status started three years ago.

But once the NYSC management confirmed that she was appointed a minister by President Bola Tinubu on Monday and was still completing her national youth service, the dispute took a fresh turn in recent days.

Therefore, her detractors started to demand that she be removed from the ministerial position, arguing that she could not hang on to both.

This publication learned through source interviews and a review of documents that an NYSC discharge certificate issued in her name in 2003 does indeed exist and is held by the Corps. Authorities, however, are refusing to release the paperwork because they believe she fled during her service year.

She claimed that the NYSC was not thorough and careful enough in looking up her records and that she was not given a fair hearing to establish her innocence.
