Only LP candidates endorsed by me will feature in guber poll — Lamidi Apapa

Lamidi Apapa, Labour Party (LP) factional leader, says only candidates endorsed by him can feature in the Nov.11 Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo governorship election.

Apapa said this when he spoke at a news conference on Thursday in Abuja, saying that the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Owerri had affirmed him as the authentic National Chairman of the party.

He said that the court also sacked the Julius Abure-led faction and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise governorship candidates produced by his faction for the election.

You will recall that on April 5 the FCT High court restrained Abure and others from parading themselves as national officers of the party.

“As a result, the party appointed the Deputy National Chairman Alhaji Lamidi Apapa as the acting national chairman of the party pursuant to its constitution.

“ Sequel to that the party under my leadership wrote to INEC changing its date of primary election earlier scheduled by Abure from April 15 to April 16.

Tinubu, Jibrin hail Sultan at 67

President Bola Tinubu and the Deputy Senate President, Sen. Barau Jibrin, have felicitated with Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar who will turn 67, today, August 24, 2023.

Tinubu in a statement released by the State House on Wednesday noted that “The moment of joy and thanksgiving with the leader of the Qadiriyya Sufi Order, who also serves as Head of Jama’atu Nasril Islam (Society for the Support of Islam) and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs.

“President Tinubu acknowledges the sacrifices and selflessness of the Sultan of Sokoto, who has, since his assumption of office in November 2006, worked assiduously for the sustenance of peaceful co-existence in the country, and beyond, personally traveling, intervening, mediating, and chairing meetings on the need for harmony.”

“As the revered former military officer, who served the nation meritoriously, clocks 67, the President believes his wealth of experience will continuously be an asset for the steady progress of the nation with a particular emphasis on bridging religious, ethnic, and cultural divides.”

Egbetokun: Police have taken steps to rid highways of criminal elements

Kayode Egbetokun, the acting inspector-general of police (IGP), says the force has taken steps to check insecurity on highways, particularly the Abuja-Kaduna expressway.

Egbetokun spoke on Wednesday at the Lagos police command in Ikeja where he inaugurated some projects, including the complainants’ response unit (CRU).

The unit will allow the publicto make complaints and seek redress as individuals and groups against police misconduct and human rights abuses.

He said the police have taken different measures to ensure that crime is reduced to the barest minimum across the country.

Biden reacts to Wagner leader’s ‘death’, says little happens in Russia without Putin’s involvement

United States President Joe Biden says “little happens in Russia without the knowledge of Vladimir Putin”, in reaction to the reported death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of the Wagner Group.

Earlier, Russia’s agency for air transport said Prigozhin, leader of the private security outfit, was among the passengers of a flight that crashed and burst into flames immediately on Wednesday.

All 10 passengers aboard the plane were reported dead.

Speaking with CNN, Biden said he wasn’t surprised that the Russian mercenary may have been targeted.
