Fani-Kayode Reacts As Gabon Military Officers Seize Power After Election

Former Minister of Ation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has responded to the coup in Gabon that occurred in the wake of an alleged fraudulent election. As reported by vanguard , the Gabonese President, Ali Bongo, was removed from power by the military shortly after winning the presidential election. According to BBC reports, soldiers made an appearance on Gabonese national television to announce their takeover of authority. The military additionally declared the nullification of the election that took place on Saturday and the dissolution of the democratic government within the country. Ali Bongo, who assumed the presidency after his father’s passing in 2009, secured a third term in an election that faced substantial opposition claims of being contested.

Fani-Kayode, in response to the situation, conveyed that he was not caught off guard by the coup and predicted that more coups might occur in the Francophone nations of West and Central Africa. He questioned whether the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) or the African Union would contemplate intervening in Gabon, similar to the case of Niger Republic’s situation.

He shared his thoughts on Twitter, stating, “Yet another coup has unfolded in Africa, this time involving the nation of Gabon. It seems my previous essay’s warning, titled ‘Does Killing Nigerien Babies Bring Glory To Our Name?’, carried a prophetic aspect. The occurrence doesn’t astonish me, and we should anticipate the likelihood of more coup events in the Francophone countries of West and Central Africa. I wonder if ECOWAS or the African Union would consider threatening intervention in Gabon as well?”
