Oyetola resumes duty, vows to reposition Marine sector

The minister of marine and blue economy, Adegboyega Oyetola on Monday resumed duty at the ministry in Abuja after he was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu.

Oyetola arrived at the ministry’s conference room around 2:15 pm in the company of his wife, Kafayat Oyetola, his son; Femi Oyetola, and some of his aides.

He was received by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the managing director of NIWA, George Moghalu, the executive secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Emmanuel Jime, and some directors of the ministry.

Oyetola urged the ministry staff to work with him to find innovative solutions to the challenges in the sector and ensure that the oceans and marine are safe, reliable, and sustainable.

He also revealed that the blue economy is estimated globally to be worth more than $1.5 trillion annually.

He said considering the size of the country’s blue economy, Nigeria should be a significant player in the sector to contribute to the country’s revenue and also provide jobs for the unemployed.

He promised to come up with practicable ways of ensuring that the inland rivers, lakes, and waterways are utilised for cargo shipment and passenger transportation.

He said: “Our oceans cover more than two-thirds of our planet’s surface, holding the key to sustainable economic growth, environmental preservation, and technological innovation. As we look ahead, my vision is rooted in the responsible management and utilisation of our marine resources to benefit not only our economy but also the health of our planet.

As new ministers took their oaths of office on Monday, President Bola Tinubu has emphasised the crucial task of rebuilding public confidence in the government.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the 45 ministers held at the State House Conference Centre, Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Tinubu urged them to prioritize transparency, integrity, and the needs of the nation.

Addressing a diverse and engaged audience, President Tinubu outlined his expectations for the newly appointed cabinet members, showing his commitment to holding them accountable to the standards the administration had promised the Nigerian people.

He told the ministers that they should work for Nigerians and not their regions or their individual states.

Tinubu, who said that he would be in the driver’s seat, the ministers as conductors with all other Nigerians in the vehicle, said that their assignment started immediately.

The president stated: “In line with the constitutional obligations the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has screened and confirmed 45 ministers who will superintend over the ministries of federal government in this administration of renewed hope.

“The men and women who have been sworn in have been carefully selected by me for their track record of excellence and achievement in the public and private sectors.

“They reflected in the diversity of Nigeria and bring to their new role an assortment of experience and expertise to help guide the nation’s affairs and also continue to rebuild the nation and re-engineer all our finances and defects, building blocks of Nigeria today and the future.

Niger state government has concluded Plans to purchase gas operating vehicles for inter and intra city services across the state as part of the steps taken to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal government.

The state Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago who stated this at the official swearing in of sixty Commissioners and Special Advisers at the Justice Legbo Kutigi Hall in Minna on Monday also added that the transport fares would also be at a reduced cost.

He pleaded with people of the state to be patient with the state government over the hardship faced adding that efforts were on by his administration to provide palliative to mitigate their sufferings.

“The welfare of people of Niger state will continue to be accorded prominence by my government as a deliberate step to improve and enhance your living standard for maximum benefits.

“While government is taking these steps, I also call on all Nigerians to embrace farming as a first step of fighting poverty.

The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS has said it’s more likely to use military force to reinstate constitutional order in Niger if the military junta led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani is hellbent on his three-year transition plan before returning to civil rule.

Fielding questions on Channels Television, Morning Rise, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, explained that the community’s chances of using military force to reinstate constitutional order in Niger are more likely.
