COUP: Before Coming To Abuja, The Military Junta Should Release President Bazoum – Ambassador Mohammed Ibrahim

Mohammed Ibrahim, a former Nigerian ambassador to Libya, responded to news that the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum’s administration in Niamey, Niger, had consented to talks with ECOWAS.

According to Ibrahim, who spoke with TVC , “This opportunity should be welcomed and the ECOWAS should start having a dialogue with them, but there are two basic issues among others: the first is for them to realize that President Bazoum remains the legitimately elected president of Niger, and the junta should immediately release President Bazoum, his family, and members of his government who have been wrongfully detained since the coup on July 26 and reinstate him.

The envoy said, “If they have good faith, the least they should do is release President Bazoum or ameliorate the circumstances of his arrest before even coming to Abuja or before any emissaries of the ECOWAS chairman visit them. Without that, I don’t believe we will recognize that they have demonstrated seriousness and good faith.
