A significant number of Imo state workers have gone without salaries for 40 months- Joe Ajaero

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has raised concerns about the dire situation faced by Imo state workers, alleging that a significant portion of them have not received their salaries for a staggering 40 months. In an interview with Channels TV news, Ajaero criticized the recent meeting between Organized Labour and the governor of Imo State.

Ajaero highlighted the objectionable nature of the meeting, pointing out that the governor of Imo State does not acknowledge the NLC’s presence within his state. He mentioned that the governor has established his own labor group and has been collaborating with them. Consequently, Ajaero questioned the legitimacy of the governor’s participation in a meeting with the national NLC.

He stated, “There are certain members of that committee whose inclusion is highly contentious and objectionable. If the governor of Imo State is part of that committee, then it is objectionable from the perspective of the Labour movement. This is because a significant portion of Imo state workers have gone without salaries for a staggering 40 months. Also, for nearly six months, the governor maintained his own version of the NLC that he was cooperating with. Given this, why would he engage with the national NLC when he does not recognize its authority?”

Ajaero’s comments points to the complex and challenging labour and salary issues faced by workers in Imo State, as well as the strained relationship between the state government and the national NLC.
