Niger Coup: Tinubu Meets Governors Sharing Boundary With Niger Republic

On Sunday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with governors of states that share borders with Niger Republic. The meeting, which took place at the State House in Abuja, was part of the President’s deliberations on the situation in Niger.

Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Mai Malam Buni (Yobe), Idris Nasir (Kebbi), and Dr Dikko Radda (Katsina) were among the governors present. Recall that President Tinubu, as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Niger Republic’s military junta to return power to Mohammed Bazoum.

In addition to the ultimatum, Tinubu announced a variety of punishments at a meeting last weekend in Abuja, including the closure of Niger’s borders and the suspension of power and flight operations indefinitely. Tinubu had written to the National Assembly leadership to seek approval for the deployment of military forces to troubled Niger, but instead received advise to proceed lightly in the current circumstances.
