Robinson Uwak, a former member of the House of Representatives, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), that sending soldiers into Niger might lead to an unrecoverable crisis and indiscriminate border destruction.

In a statement released on Sunday, according to Nigerian Tribune, the legislator urged Tinubu not to start a war in the Niger Republic in the wake of the military coup that toppled President Mohamed Bazoum.

The legislator’ s call came after ECOWAS threatened to invade Niger if all diplomatic attempts from outside allies were unsuccessful.

Uwak counseled Tinubu to stay on the route of discussion, said that a war’ s aftermath can traumatize local residents.

The ECOWAS sub- regional peace and stability would gain long- term from Mr. President suspending any discussion of military action and sustaining the dialogue option.

” The President should carefully consider the effects of any battle with our neighboring nation, including the potential for PTSD, the breakup of cross- border filial ties, and the damage and possibly permanent disabilities. By all means, let’ s avoid this war, ” Uwak said.

He praised the Sultan of Sokoto and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a former head of state and chairman of the National Peace Committee, for volunteering to act as peacemakers between their respective nations.

Recall that Tinubu had asked the Nigerian Senate for permission to send troops to the Niger Republic despite the country being subject to economic sanctions.

The lawmakers, however, turned down Tinubu’ s plea.

The junta has also sworn to hold onto power for three years before allowing a democratic election in light of the current situation.
