Dr. Abdullahi Gnaduje, National Chairman of the APC, recently provided clarifications regarding the controversy surrounding former ministerial nominee Maryam Shetty.
According to the Daily Trust, in a series of interviews with select radio stations in Kano on Saturday, he acknowledged that the outrage on social media surrounding Shetty’s appointment played a significant role in her removal, highlighting the power of social media.
He emphasized that the President has advisors at both the national and state levels who assist with the selection of ministerial nominees.
He noted that the President has the prerogative to nominate whoever he wishes and has the right to consult individuals within the states, as they are aware of the capabilities of potential candidates.
Gnaduje added that Shetty’s name emerged from the top, and as followers of the President, they did not object to the nomination. However, they were not familiar with her and were unable to evaluate her.
However, she faced intense criticism on social media, particularly questioning her integrity, experience, and credentials to represent Kano at the national level. This dissatisfaction was not from Gnaduje himself but rather from the people of Kano.
President Tinubu became aware of the criticism surrounding her nomination and inquired about Gnaduje’s involvement. Gnaduje confirmed that he had not nominated her and had no knowledge of how her name appeared on the list.
Regarding the replacement of Shetty, he agreed with the decision, as the ministerial position requires integrity, knowledge, experience, and commitment to the party.
To fulfill these requirements and consult the people of Kano, he recommended Dr. Mariya Bunkure, his former commissioner for higher education, who is a certified medical doctor.
He said that this nomination aimed to address concerns of marginalization in Kano South and ensure a qualified candidate from Kano was selected. He also clarified that the people of Kano are satisfied with the current developments and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to nominate someone else.
He asserted that the purpose of these clarifications is not to insult anyone but to provide the truth about what truly occurred. He emphasized that Shetty’s suitability was questioned, leading to her replacement, but this does not mean she will not receive another appointment in the future.
