TUC opts out of NLC warning strike

The Trade Union Congress, TUC said it will not take part in the nationwide warning strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), scheduled to begin Tuesday.

P. M. report that, President of the TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo urged the NLC to intensify dialogue with the government, an approach it has adopted.

After meeting with Labour Minister Simon Lalong, Osifo said, “As of today, the need to launch a nationwide strike hasn’t arisen, so the leadership of Congress should intensify the conversation with government so that all grey areas identified could be ironed out within the time frame given.”

Last Monday, the NLC announced that its members would start a warning strike tomorrow.

After the government eliminated the petrol subsidy, which cost the government roughly $10 billion annually, it will then go on a national strike to protest the growing cost of living.

Following a government offer of discussions, the Unions temporarily halted their strike action. However, the government’s concessions during those talks were insufficient to appease organized labor, thus the Unions have resumed their strike action.
