Tribunal: There Is Tension Because INEC Failed To Do Its Work As It Is Supposed – Igho Akeregha

A member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Igho Akeregha, has insinuated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), failed to conduct a transparent Presidential election on the 25th of February, 2023; as he maintained that there wouldn’t have been so much tension about the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal if the Electoral Commission had done a good job.

Akeregha had said, “There is tension because INEC failed to do its work as it is supposed to do.”

Igho Akeregha, who spoke during an interview on Kakaaki, an AIT Television programme, found fault in the conduct of the 2023 Presidential election, as he maintained that Institutions in Nigeria have been set up to fail. He expressed disappointment that the country has always had to resort back to the Judiciary to determine the authenticity of a declaration by the INEC. According to him, if the results of elections are not contested by many parties, there would have been confidence in the Electoral Commission.

Akeregha, however, maintained that the decision of the Tribunal is not final, since aggrieved parties can still approach the Supreme Court. He maintained that the tension in the country is unnecessary.
