Tribunal Gives Ruling On The 25% Abuja Votes Filed By Obi Against Tinubu, Says It's Irrelevant

The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has delivered verdict on the failure of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to secure 25 percent votes in the Federal Capital Territory in the February 25th presidential election.

It should be recalled that following the outcome of the election which produced Tinubu as the winner of the election, Peter Obi of the Labour Party had asked the court to disqualify Tinubu because Tinubu did not have 25 percent votes in Abuja which is required by the Constitution to be declared president of Nigeria.

In its ruling, the election petition tribunal said that the 25 percent votes in Abuja is not relevant because Abuja does not have any special status, and that it is Nigerians that live in Abuja.

In the report which was made by Sahara Reporters on Wednesday September 6, 2023, the tribunal said – “The FCT does not enjoy a special status and that Abuja is inhabited by Nigerians and that Abuja does not enjoy any special privilege.

“It was observed irrelevant,” the tribunal ruled.

The ruling on the 25 percent votes in Abuja is coming after the tribunal had earlier ruled that the Labour Party and Peter Obi claimed that there were electoral irregularities during the election, but failed to provide evidence where the irregularities took place.
