Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and immediate past Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal from the party.

Wike, who spoke yesterday on Channels Television evening programme “Politics Today”, said the actions of the duo were inimical to the progress of the main opposition party.

The FCT minister, who was reacting to Wednesday’s tribunal verdict, stressed that the judges had shown that they knew their onions and could not be intimidated to do what was not right.

Asked if the presidential election was fair, the immediate past Rivers State governor said there was no other way the wishes of the people could be reflected than through the ballot.

“How do you determine the will of the people? Is it not through the ballot box,” he queried?

Chairmanship nominee on the board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chiedu Ebie, has declared that he has no regret working against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while still being its member during the last general election.

Ebie, former Commissioner for Basic Education, was until May 2021, Secretary to the Delta State Government during the tenure of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

He, along with other aggrieved members of the party disagreed with Okowa on the choice of his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Ebie was suspended in March over alleged anti-party activities. However, Ebie who spoke in Asaba during a visit to the state secretariat of APC to intimate the leadership of his nomination as NDDC chairman, said as a man of courage, he did not regret working against his own party at the time.

Ebie who visited with the nominee as Delta State representative on the board of the interventionist agency and former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Monday Igbuya, said he and many others remained in the PDP during the elections for strategic reasons.

We Lost A Battle, Not war –Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rejected the judgment of the presidential election petition tribunal (PEPT).

At a press conference in Abuja, yesterday, the former vice president claimed that by the verdict, the party has only lost a battle and not the war and urged his supporters to remain calm, noting that they shall prevail eventually.

The PEPT had, on Wednesday, upheld the declaration of President Bola Tinubu by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as winner of the February 25, presidential poll.

But Atiku explained that his decision to challenge the result of the presidential poll was borne out of his conviction that the court is the sanctuary of justice but said the judgment was bereft of substantial justice.

“I am afraid that the judgment of the court as rendered by the court yesterday (Wednesday) has failed to restore confidence in our dreams of free and fair elections devoid of human manipulations.

“Like I did say at the beginning of this legal battle when I instructed my lawyers to file my petition challenging the outcome of the presidential election, my ultimate goal in this pursuit is to ensure that democracy is further strengthened through the principles and processes of fair hearing.

“I take great pains to tell you that the decision of the court of first instance on this matter utterly falls far short of that expectation.

Despite running a democratic government since 1999, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chief Mike Ozekhome, yesterday, said Nigeria was not practising true democracy as elections do not reflect wishes of the electorate.

Ozekhome, who spoke at the 22nd edition of the annual Bishop Mike Okonkwo Lecture in Lagos, also said Nigeria was bleeding and required urgent action from the ruled and rulers to address the situation.

This is as former presidential aspirant and Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, warned that the country had become more divided than before, warning that the situation portends grave danger.

Ozekhome, who spoke on “Nigerianisation of Nigeria: A Look Inward” claimed that the nation’s political governance began to be thwarted since1966. He said there had been several military takeover until 1999, when the fourth republic came into being following the emergence of General Olusegun Obasenjo as civilian president.
