The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, on Friday, called on the Federal Government to consider renaming the East-West Road in the South-South region to reflect its real location and status.

He also urged the government to ensure more inclusiveness in the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to give the Niger Delta people a sense of belonging.

Diri spoke when he received the Minister of Niger Delta, Abubakar Momoh, and his entourage, which included the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Samuel Ogbuku, at the Government House in Yenagoa.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, noted that the road had been in a deplorable condition for years, contending that the nomenclature of the road, which crisscrosses all the south-south states, was a misnomer.

The former governor said, “The evidence of your excellent performance is all over the place for everybody to see. I don’t have to wait till mid-term to do an assessment of your performance. The people have already given you a pass mark and I am happy you didn’t disappoint the people.

PDP faults Umahi over planned concrete for federal roads

The Peoples Democratic Party, Ebonyi State chapter, has faulted the directive by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, that the Federal Government would prefer to use concrete technology for federal roads.

The party also said the direct labour approach to road construction deployed by Umahi when he was the governor of Ebonyi State had failed to yield the desired result.

Umahi had in his maiden press briefing recently said contractors who opt for asphalt instead of concrete must give guarantee that the road would last, noting that concrete roads would last for 50 years.

He stated, “What we are saying to all contractors is that they have two choices to make. Choice number one, you must begin to do our roads according to the design which means that if the shelf life of our roads is 30 years, you must ensure that they last 30 years and you give us an indemnity for that. If you are already committed to asphalt, you must also commit to the durability of the roads without excuse.
