Ohanaeze remarked while applauding President Bola Tinubu for appointing a southerner as FCT Minister. It said it was a welcome development that the President has finally appointed a Southerner to the position, which northerners have occupied since the return of democracy in 1999.

A statement by its Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said the last southerner to occupy the office of “FCT Minister was late Prof. Miriam Odinchezo ikejiani-Clark, an Igbo and first woman to be appointed as FCT boss by Gen Sani Abacha 1995-97.” The organization said it is hopeful that Wike will work to ensure that the development of the territory is not lopsided but reflects the interests of all Nigerians.

Maduka, who spoke during the flag-off in Umuahia, on Thursday, assured the workers that all hitches in the payment of salaries, allowances, and retirement would be a thing of the past after the exercise. She pointed out that the exercise among other things would check padding of salaries and other sharp practices committed by corrupt individuals in the system.

Maduka said the exercise was initiated by Governor Alex Otti with a focus on streamlining activities in the Abia State public service to better the lot of Abia workers and enhance efficient and effective service delivery mechanisms. She said, “After this all-important exercise, we strongly believe that the Abia State public service would have been purged of some negative vices such as the ‘ghost workers’ syndrome and genuine workers shall have all the dividends of the service, which include prompt and regular payment of salaries and other fringe benefits, such as prompt and regular payment of leave allowances and regular promotion.

Falana Criticises ‘Illegal’ Floating Of Naira, Takes CBN To Court

The decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under President Bola Tinubu to float the naira is illegal and being challenged in court, human rights lawyer Femi Falana has said.

On June 14, at a time when the naira traded between 730 and 755 to the dollar at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window, the apex bank reportedly told Deposit Money Banks to freely float the naira against the dollar and other international currencies.

As of Friday, the CBN website puts the exchange rate between N744 and N746. But Falana, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily Friday, said the CBN Act made it compulsory for the apex bank to fix the exchange rate. “There’s no provision for floating the naira. It’s illegal. You say, ‘The value of the naira will be determined by market forces.’ That is not there in the law,” he said.
