Why Buhari must be put on trial —Ikechukwu Amaechi

AS President Bola Tinubu pretends to be providing leadership for our beleaguered country, one question remains unanswered: what to do with former President Muhammadu Buhari. In the eight years that Buhari, a putschist and former military head of state, held sway as civilian president, he destroyed the country, literally.

In recent times, those who knew he was a disaster in Aso Rock but dubiously claimed that he was the best thing to happen to Nigeria are beginning to sing like a canary. First, it was Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and current National Security Adviser, NSA, who said Tinubu did not create most of the problems Nigerians are complaining about. “Most of the problems we are talking about are not the creation of this government … We inherited a very bad situation,” he said two weeks ago. Then, speaking with journalists after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, erstwhile governor of Edo State said Tinubu inherited “a terrible economic situation”.

Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who currently represents Edo North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, said: “The government inherited an economy in which the total national revenue was barely enough to service our debt burden. Spending 96 percent; which is to say every one hundred nairas Nigeria earns, 96 kobo is to pay the debt. Nothing can be worse.” He is right. It cannot be worse. But what jumps out at anyone who cares to interrogate Oshiomhole further on why Nigeria is at a crossroads in his disingenuousness – the attempt to distance the APC from the Buhari mess. After the failure of their subterfuge to ensure that they are spared the task of having to account for the apotheosis of Buhari, there is now a seeming willingness to throw the former president under the grinding wheels of his iniquitous bus. But in doing so, there is also a deliberate attempt to insulate the APC from blame and the reason is simple.

Babangida is the former military President and would turn 82 years old on Thursday. This is contained in a statement by Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, on Wednesday in Abuja. Tinubu congratulated Babangida, saying he had served in many capacities in the Nigerian army with distinction and reached the peak of his career as Chief of Army Staff.

The President said the celebrant left indelible legacies for his gallant defense of nationhood during the Nigerian Civil War. He commended Babangida’s immense contributions to national development. He said this included the creation of many states to strengthen the Federal structure, physical infrastructure, the liberalization of the media industry, and other initiatives across the health and defense sectors.

Appeal Court throws out vote-buying allegation against Abiodun, says it’s belated, an afterthought

A special panel of the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, yesterday, affirmed the decision of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had earlier struck out all allegations of vote-buying and voter-inducement that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its gubernatorial candidate, Ladi Adebutu, made against Governor Dapo Abiodun and All Progressives Congress (APC).

The court, in its lead judgment read by Justice M.B. Idris, also upheld another decision of the tribunal, which confirmed the validity of the defense filed by Abiodun. It confirmed that all allegations of vote-buying in Adebutu’s reply were incompetent and as such, the Court of Appeal struck out paragraphs 21, 22, 23, 24, 31, 32, 33, 36, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44 of the reply, leaving some few hollow paragraphs.

In the same vein, the court threw out the entire appeal filed by Adebutu and the PDP against the decision of the tribunal, which upheld the validity of Abiodun’s dedefenseEarlier in his defense, Abiodun had made a strong allegation of electoral fraud against the PDP and its candidate, Adebutu, which was perpetrated during the March 18, 2023 governorship election in the state.
