Gabon: ‘Democracy Dies In Africa When Elections Are Poisoned’ – Shehu Sani

According to vanguard news, Former Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has put forth the viewpoint that it is now crucial to examine the reasons behind the failures of democracies in African nations.

This assertion comes after recent coup attempts, including one in Niger Republic where the coup leaders attributed their actions to escalating insecurity and a lack of economic progress, emphasizing the need to prevent the gradual decline of the nation.

Similarly, in the context of Gabon, the military authorities attributed their intervention to an alleged fraudulent presidential election that resulted in the ascension of Ali Bongo to the presidency.

Speaking on behalf of the Gabonese population, the military officials expressed their resolve to maintain peace by bringing an end to the existing regime, which had persisted for more than four decades.

Niger: Shehu Sani Lists 5 Factors Responsible For Coups In West Africa

Taking to Twitter, Shehu Sani voiced his opinion that the focus should shift from questioning why military coups are achieving success in Africa to analyzing the reasons for the failures of democratic systems.

The former legislator expressed astonishment at the scenes of jubilation and dancing on the streets of Gabon following the coup.

Sani additionally highlighted that the Bongo family had exerted significant control and detrimentally impacted democracy, and he noted that democratic processes in Africa tend to deteriorate whenever elections are compromised.

He tweeted, “It’s time we stop asking why military coups are succeeding in Africa and start asking why democracies are failing in Africa. A BBC correspondent just reported people in Gabon are ‘genuinely’ trooping out to the streets in support of the Coup in Libreville. The Bongo family dominated and destroyed Democracy. Democracy dies in Africa when elections are poisoned.”
