The Chidi Ibeh-led faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, advised presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, to stand alone or even partner with President Bola Tinubu, rather than align with the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, or Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, in a statement in Abakaliki, said: “There is possibility of collapse in their talks because Nigerians will not accept Atiku or Kwankwaso as leaders of an alliance. Nigerians know that the uncharitable disposition and desperation of Atiku Abubakar will never allow him to support Peter Obi to become leader of the opposition.

“The ill-fated journey of Atiku, Obi and Kwankwaso will crumble in the future. Nigerians are warning the presidential candidate of LP to be wary of failed politicians, whose interest is looking for a way to exploit the credibility and popularity of Obi, to see how to depose President Bola Tinubu.

“Nigerians are keenly watching the latest attempt of drowning politicians to use Obi to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the future. The indelible stain of such alliance talks, among Atiku, Kwankwaso and Obi, will destroy Peter Obi, if he, Obi, decides to play second fiddle.

“Ohanaeze cautions Obi that association with Atiku and Kwankwaso will destroy him, except if the two support him to lead a unified opposition political party, which is unlikely.”

President Joe Biden departed for Hawaii on Monday to view the widespread damage from recent Maui wildfires, meet with survivors, and fend off criticism that his government was too slow to respond to the disaster.

After a helicopter tour of the damage, Biden is due to announce further relief funding and the appointment of a federal response coordinator. Critics, including disgruntled survivors in Hawaii and some Republicans hoping to face Biden in next year’s presidential election, say aid has been inadequate and poorly organized.

Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will arrive nearly two weeks after ferocious, wind-whipped blazes ripped through the historic town of Lahaina, claiming at least 114 lives. The flames moved so quickly that residents and visitors were caught off-guard, trapped in the streets, or jumping into the ocean to escape the worst natural disaster in Hawaii state’s history.

The All Progressives Congress and the All Progressives Grand Alliance have engaged each other in a war of words over the palliatives released by the Federal Government across the states to cushion the petroleum subsidy removal.

The South East APC Young Progressives Forum, Anambra State Chapter, had on Saturday, issued a statement, asking the Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to account for the Federal Government’s subsidy palliatives assigned to the state.

In the statement co-signed by the National Convener of the group, Paschal Candle and others, on Saturday, the group decried that everything about the FG’s palliative was being handled in secrecy in Anambra.

Part of the group’s statement read, “We are all aware from the NEC meeting held on Thursday, the Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum told Nigerians that the Federal Government had already released five trucks of rice to all states last week and that the N5bn was approved by Mr President for disbursement to the states to enable each of the states to procure additional 100,000 bags of rice, 40,000 bags of maize and fertiliser to be distributed to the most vulnerable across their various states.

Tinubu warns ministers against ethnic politics

President Bola Tinubu on Monday charged the 45 newly inaugurated Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to prioritise the interests and welfare of the entire nation and its diverse population, above any regional or state-specific considerations.

Speaking at the inauguration of new members of the Federal Executive Council at the State House Conference Centre, the President underscored the immense responsibility the ministers now bear in shaping policies that will significantly influence the lives of hundreds of millions of Nigerians.

“You are not a minister of a particular state, colony, region, or ethnic nationality. You are a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” President Tinubu declared, setting the tone for his directive to the new ministers.

“This is all about the cohesion and work of a great team, and I believe we now have it. It is an honour to be chosen to serve as a minister in the Federal Executive Council, and such a high honour comes with tremendous responsibility. In this moment of abundant promise and peril in equal measure, all of you that have been sworn in have been called to distinguish yourselves. Nigerians are highly expectant of excellence in service delivery, accountability, and transparency,” he said.
