If FCT Has Equal Status With Other States, Why Is It That Only One Senator Represents FCT? -Ukeh

The decision of the presidential election petition tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday, which saw all petitions brought by opposition parties against Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu being struck out, has sparked mixed reactions.

Justice Haruna Tsammani led the five-member panel that dismissed the petitions filed by Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, while upholding Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory.

According to the Sun paper, in a related matter, Onuoha Ukeh, a well-known Nigerian columnist with the Sun paper, argued in his article that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) cannot have the same status as other states in the federation. He pointed out that only one senator represents the FCT in the Senate, while other states have three each. Ukeh questioned the interpretation that “and” means “part of,” stating that this is not consistent with English language norms. This argument formed part of his piece in the Sun paper.
