Labour Party crisis: Apapa’s Chairmanship Claim Is False – Abure’s faction

The Julius Abure faction of the Labour Party (LP) says the claim by Lamidi Apapa that the court has affirmed him as the authentic National Chairman of the party is false.

Malam Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the faction, said this at a news conference in Abuja on Friday.

Farouk said that the Certified True Copy of the suit did not involve Abure.

“This conference is called purposely to clear the air on yet another attempt by some of our former members.

“They rebelled against the party and went ahead to shamelessly misinform members of the public on the considerable progress being made to reposition LP as one of the biggest political parties in Nigeria.

Nigeria Did Not Apply To Join BRICS, Says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima says Nigeria did not apply for membership of BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Shettima spoke hours after the economic bloc said it is admitting six new members – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

While many wondered why Nigeria did not join the group, Shettima on Friday said the country never applied for ERICS membership.

“So far, we have not applied for the membership of BRICS. And it is majorly informed by the fact that my principal President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a true democrat that believes in consensus building,” he told Channels Television on the sideline of the BRICS Summit which was held in South Africa.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State says African leaders must create room for credible polls for the survival of democracy.

He said this at a three-day executive retreat organised by the African office of the United Nations Development Programme ongoing at Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, according to a statement from his spokesman Olawale Rasheed.

“I am glad to be here. Permit me to call on leaders in and out of here that we must allow democracy to work. We are products of the democratic process. So we should allow free and fair elections,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

“Our people put us here. So we must serve their interest. If we fail to serve their interest, we must accept when we are voted out. Once we are elected, we must be on our toes and make a difference. That is how democracy can thrive.

Niger’s Junta Gives French Ambassador 48 Hours To Leave Country

The military rulers who seized control in Niamey on July 26 have given the French ambassador 48 hours to leave Niger, the country’s minister of foreign affairs said in a statement Friday.

Faced with “the refusal of the French ambassador in Niamey to respond to an invitation” from the minister for a meeting Friday and “other actions of the French government contrary to the interests of Niger”, the authorities have decided to withdraw their approval of Sylvain Itte and ask him to depart within 48 hours, the statement said.

The coup leaders have not been shy about their relationship with France.

Niger has accused French forces of freeing captured “terrorists” and breaching a ban on the country’s air space in an attempt to destabilise the country.
