It Will Be A Disaster For Judges In Appeal Court To Rule That 25% Votes In FCT Is Important- Kargbo

Sam Kargbo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has expressed his concerns regarding the potential implications of the Court of Appeal ruling against the decision of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT). The PEPT had recently ruled that a presidential candidate does not need to secure at least 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to win the election, stating that Abuja should not hold a special status in this regard. Mr. Kargbo shared his perspective during an interview on AIT, stating g the equality of FCT inhabitants with residents of other states in Nigeria.

In his statement, Mr. Kargbo warned that it would be disastrous if the Court of Appeal were to rule differently and insist on the 25% requirement in Abuja. He argued that there is no valid basis for such a requirement, as the citizens and inhabitants of the FCT are equal to those residing in other states of Nigeria. He underlined the principle of equality, asserting that Abuja residents should not be afforded any special status in electoral matters.

“It will be a disaster for the judges in the Appeal Court to rule otherwise and say it’s important to get 25% of votes in Abuja because there is no basis for it. The citizens and inhabitants of the FCT are just like every other citizens and inhabitants in other states so why would you expect some form of special status.”
