Gabon: Expect More Coups In Africa—FFK

Former Ation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that there will be more coups in the French-speaking West and Central African countries near future.

Fani-Kayode said this on following a coup that was staged in Gabon to topple the democratic government of President Ali Bongo, who has been in power since 2009.

Bongo was announced as the winner of the presidential election in the West African country on Saturday, having fulfilled a two-thirds victory at the polls.

The Gabonese military officers who were dissatisfied with Bongo’s family’s 53-year rule in power overthrew him on Wednesday.

Reacting to the incident which was the latest in the military takeovers spreading in the Sahel region, Fani-Kayode said this will in Africa, until the stakeholders heed the warning he gave on his previous essay titled: ‘Does Killing Nigerien Babies Bring Glory To Our Name?’

In the article, the ex-minister condemned the cut of power supplies to Niger by the federal government which is adversely affecting the hospitals, and leading to the deaths of babies as pregnant women give birth.

The Peoples Republic of China has called on the relevant parties in Gabon to resolve their differences through dialogue, restore normal order as soon as possible, and ensure the personal safety of Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the appeal during a press conference on Wednesday, according to Indian outlet, Wion .

“China is closely following the developing situation in Gabon,” Wenbin said, adding that, “We call on all sides in Gabon to proceed from the basic interests of the country and the people, resolve differences through dialogue, (and) restore normal order as soon as possible.”

The Chinese foreign minister, however, appealed to all parties to “guarantee the personal safety of President Bongo, and uphold national peace and stability.”

The military junta that took over power in Gabon on Wednesday have stated that the ousted Gabonese president, Ali Bongo Ondimba is currently under house arrest.

The military leaders stated this on national Television where they announced that they were “putting an end to the current regime” and cancelling an election that, according to official results, President Ali Bongo Ondimba won.

SaharaReporters had reported that a dozen of Gabonese soldiers announced the cancellation of the results of the country and noted that “all the institutions of the republic” had been dissolved.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared that Nigeria is a poor country and commended President Bola Tinubu for his courage to end fuel subsidies.

Soludo, who spoke on Tuesday during the 9th (7th Quadrennial) Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Anambra State wing, described the removal of subsidy as necessary.

Soludo stated that the removal had the potential to re-engineer the nation’s economy.

He said: “It’s high time the country woke up to the reality that it is a poor country and began to live within its means.

“Starting from those in leadership, there was a need to begin to live and demonstrate to the people that Nigeria is a poor country.
