Gabon: Africa Will Experience More Coups, Says Fani-Kayode

Former Ation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said there would be many military coups to hit the French-speaking West and Central African nations unless cautions are taken.

The former minister made this known his X platform, in a shocking reaction to a military coup that ousted President Ali Bongo of Gabon. Daily Trust had earlier reported that some top army officers seized power from the democratically elected government of Bongo which just won a presidential election on Saturday.

Bongo has been in government since 2009 when he succeeded his father who died in power. The tourists announced the termination of the 53 years of Bongo’s family reins in the Central African country as twelve officers announced the takeover on national television.

Putin Shuns Burial Of Wagner Boss

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, did not attend the funeral of Wagner Boss, the group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash just months after his rebellion against the Kremlin.

A closed-door “farewell ceremony” was held Tuesday to honor the life of the 62-year-old mercenary chief, who recently launched one of the most significant challenges to Putin’s authority in his more than 20 years of rule.

Prigozhin’s spokespeople confirmed the services were carried out and urged those who still wish to pay their respects to visit the Porokhovskoye cemetery in Prigozhin’s hometown of St. Petersburg.

Army uncovers illegal oil refining sites in Imo, Delta

The Nigerian Army has said it has uncovered illegal oil refining camps in Imo and Delta states. The service also said it intercepted boats and vehicles laden with illegal oil products.

In a statement on Wednesday by the Director, Aof rmy Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, troops intercepted 15 sacks and 13 Jerrycans of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil concealed in the camp.

The statement partly read, “Troops of 343 Artillery Regiment conducting anti-oil theft operations on Monday 28 August 2023 cracked down on an oil thieves’ camp in Obokofia community in Imo State. In the crackdown, the vigilant troops intercepted 15 sacks and 13 Jerrycans of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil concealed in the camp.

Minutes after Gabon’s electoral commission announced on Wednesday that President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won a third term in office, senior military officers announced a coup and annulled the election results.

According to local media reports, Brice Clothaire Oligui Nguema, the commander-in-chief of the Gabonese Republican Guard – the country’s most powerful security unit – and a cousin to Bongo, is the ringleader of the attempted coup.
