Niger’s ousted president, Mohamed Bazoum has said that if the coup launched against his government by a military faction is successful, it will have devastating consequences for the country, region and the whole world.

He asserted that Boko Haram and other terrorist movements will surely take advantage of Niger’s instability, using their country as a staging ground to attack neighbouring countries and undermine peace, safety and freedom around the world.

Mohamed Bazoum who made this known in a letter titled ‘My country is under attack and I’ve been taken hostage,’ said Niger’s security situation is significantly better than that of our neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, whose governments, both installed by military takeovers, support the illegal coup.

He explained that rather than addressing security concerns by strengthening their own capacity, they employ criminal Russian mercenaries such as the Wagner Group at the expense of their people’s rights and dignity.

A human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Femi Falana, has insisted that the $800 million from the World Bank could only be a grant and not a loan.

Falana made this known in an interview with Channels Television on Thursday.

Recall that the Federal Government plans to distribute N8,000 to 12 million poor households in the country for six months to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy.

But, Falana described the loan from the World Bank as illegal and contravenes the laws in the country, as against the position of the World Bank.

He said, “I didn’t write the law, but I’m saying that under the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, loans can only be procured by Nigeria for the purpose of executing capital projects. There’s no provision for palliative [care] under the law.
