Immediate-past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, says former Vice President Atiku Abubakar lacks the moral grounds to accuse him of corruption after what former President Olusegun Obasanjo had written about him (Atiku).
Ortom also described Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last general elections, as the first presidential candidate in the country to be rejected by key party stakeholders.
The ex-Benue governor was reacting to a statement by Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu, accusing him and other G-5 governors of seeking favours from the ruling All Progressives Congress to evade prosecution.

The Department of State Services (DSS) Thursday said it has charged the suspended Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele to court.
The spokesman of the Service Dr Peter Afunanya made this known in a statement after an Abuja High Court directed that Emefiele be charged or released within seven days.
The statement reads: “Sequel to an Abuja High Court Order of today, 13th July 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele has been charged to Court in compliance with the Order. The public may recall that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation.
Though he obtained a restraining Order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June, 2023, on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.
“The Service assures the public of professionalism, justice and fairness in handling this matter and indeed the discharge of its duties within the confines of the law.”

IPOB’s ‘sit-at home order on Mondays’ has been in force since 2021. It has been largely successful with most Igbos including Peter Obi, of the Labour Party who refused to campaign on Mondays during last February election, obeying the order. David Umahi who as chairman of southeast governors’ forum tried to assure us of Igbo’s choice of Nigeria over IPOB’s dream-Biafra was reminded by the non-state actors ‘that neither Igbo’s elected governors nor Igbo elite can decide the fate of Igbo’.
As if to prove who truly wields power in the south-eastern states, Owerri metropolis was shut down just this last Monday 12 July 12 with markets, banks, schools and supermarkets closed as residents continued to observe the seven days sit-at-home directive by a separatist leader and Finland-based Simon Ekpa
