Abure to LP supporters: Don’t be discouraged
Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has asked supporters of the party not to be discouraged by the judgement of the presidential election petitions tribunal.
On Wednesday, the tribunal struck out the various charges filed by Peter Obi and the LP, challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election.
Abure, in a statement on Friday, said the tribunal verdict would be appealed, adding that the party’s participation in the 2023 elections changed the political landscape in the country.
“Let me start first by thanking all our supporters, Labour Party members and the Obidient members for their immense support towards the party,” Abure said.
“Out of their support for the party, we have in our kitty today a governor, 35 members of the House of Representatives, 8 distinguished Senators and several House of Assembly members.”
NLC calls for tax justice
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has advocated for a proper implementation of tax justice to enable higher-income earners in the country to pay higher taxes than low-income earners.
Mr Eustace James, NLC Focal Person on Tax Justice, made the call in an interview with the Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja.
“Those who occupy public offices, those who erect mighty buildings with public funds, and yet they don’t pay taxes, should be made to pay taxes accordingly, ” he said.
He decried the system where low-income earners and the vulnerable in society pay higher and double taxes while those occupying high public offices do not pay taxes.
“Tax justice is about bringing equity and justice to tax payments, about people paying based on what they earn. It is about eliminating extortion and exploitation of the poor as well as taxing on the basis of pure justice,” he said.
Timi Frank tells Shettima when Atiku will retire from politics
The ex-Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, has reacted to Vice President Kashim Shettima’s boastful statement that he would retire Atiku Abubakar to Fombina to rear goats and broilers.
He said no man except God can retire Atiku Abubakar, who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP on February 25, from politics.
Frank alleged in a statement he issued on Friday that the President Election Petition Tribunal verdict, which Shettima was gloating over, had been predetermined and compromised, a development he claimed, led to graveyard silence by Nigerians, even when APC was declared the winner.
He said there was a preponderance of hard facts and evidence adduced before them that showed that Tinubu never won the last Presidential election.
He described Shettima’s statement after the Tribunal Verdict as unstatemanly, adding that Atiku and Peter Obi remain the heroes of democracy in Nigeria.
Frank stressed that Atiku and Obi have fought for a free, fair, and transparent democratic system, notwithstanding whether they got justice at the Tribunal or not.
He said: “Shettima should know that one with God, as they say, is majority.
“Atiku has the majority, and this is why Nigerians did not jubilate nor celebrate the pyrrhic affirmation through the judicial coup orchestrated by the PEPC affirming Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election.”
Nine ward chairmen, 700 NNPP members decamp to Labour Party in Kaduna
Nine ward chairmen and about 700 members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kaduna have decamped to the Labour Party (LP).
Ekene Abubakar Adams, the member representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in the state, and the Northwest Chairman of LP, Umaru Mohammadu, on Thursday received the decampees in Kaduna.
The decampees are from Kujama, Narayi, Sabon-Tasha, Kakau, Sabon-Gari Rido, Nasarawa, Gwagwada and Yelwa wards.
Ekene, with other LP chieftains, while receiving them at his constituency office, said they had taken the right decision given the rising profile of the party in the state.
“More stakeholders from different political parties will have no choice but to come into the party considering the good representation we have seen so far. History is about to be made in Kaduna and the nation because the Labour Party is a movement which is set to present a benchmark for good governance and take over the reins of power for the benefit of all,” he said.
