The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has said lessons have been learned from the 2023 general elections and that there would be an improvement in the forthcoming circle elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states. He added that the commission is satisfied with the feedback it got during the 2023 post-election review organized by the commission.

Speaking during the just concluded three-day review of the 2023 elections in Lagos, the INEC boss disclosed that most of the issues raised and recommendations made to improve the Nation’s elections would be tested in the coming elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa.

“We promised Nigerians that we were going to hold the election review meeting and conclude it within one month. We started on the 4th of July, and today is the 4th of August. The response has been overwhelming. Remember, we started with the state-level consultation with the RECs, we had an engagement with the transport unions, we then met with the State collation of the presidential election in Abuja, and then we had engagements with political parties and civil organizations, among others. So overall, we are encouraged by the response of stakeholders across the board and the quality of the contributions they have made.

Asked about the challenges that popped up during the review, he said, The number of challenges that came up, technology for voter accreditation, and result management, have been some of the issues raised, and recommendations made.

A former Senior Special Assistant on Policy Formulation and Programmes to President Bola Tinubu when he served as the governor of Lagos State between 1999 and 2007, Dr Dapo Thomas, shares with MUHAMMED LAWAL his expectations from the Tinubu presidency

Many Nigerians have described some of Tinubu’s economic policies since assuming office as inflicting hardship on the people, do you agree with those who said things could have been done differently?

If you go through the history of subsidy under the military and civilian administrations, it has never gone well with the people. They were always against it. There was never a time an attempt was made to remove subsidy that did not result in rioting. Surprisingly, people have given him the necessary support, hoping that things will get better and based on his credibility when he was in Lagos. It is in his character to always take care of the poor. There is no way we can start seeing the results now. He has suspended the five per cent excise tax on telecoms and others. This means we are approaching a level where we will begin to see the effect of this policy.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has regretted the impending exit of British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline from Nigeria after 51 years.

This follows the company’s announcement of plans to end its prescription medicines and vaccine production in the country.

The PUNCH reports that the multinational pharmaceutical company said it would transition to a third-party direct distribution model for its pharmaceutical products.

Reacting to the development in a tweet on Friday night, Obi said that the company’s reason for leaving Nigeria is even more disheartening as they no longer perceive a prospect for the country as a business environment that would be anchored on productivity.

President Bola Tinubu has been urged to restrain himself from using force in Niger Republic against the military junta led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani which overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum last week.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Sunday morning, Justice Osai Ahiakwo said the threat by Tinubu to apply military force to restore normalcy is unwarranted and will compound the socioeconomic burdens of the country.

There have been mounting pressures even from the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on Tinubu to restrain against invading Niger.Ahiakwo described Tinubu’s stand as stiff, advising that he must listen to voices of reason which have called for the application of diplomacy.

Ahiakwo reminded President Tinubu of the terrible hardship and lives of Nigerians both soldiers and civilians that will go, insisting that the country does not stand to gain anything from invading Niger.

He stated that “Several economic sanctions on the coup plotters would also not encourage harmonious and amicable resolution as the current impasse will occasion severe hardship on the generality of the nation’s citizenry.

“President Tinubu must apply serious caution in order not to escalate the already fractured region that is a spectator over the civil war between Russia and Ukraine.
