Tinubu Nominates Festus Keyamo As Minister And Replaces Dr. Maryam Shetty

President Bola Tinubu has made significant changes to his ministerial nominations, submitting Mr. Festus Keyamo’s name for consideration and approval by the Nigerian Senate as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and read at the plenary session on Friday, Tinubu also announced the withdrawal of Dr. Maryam Shetty’s earlier nomination from Kano. He replaced her with a new nominee, Dr. Mairiga Mahmud, also from Kano.

The decision comes in compliance with the provision of Section 147 subsection 2 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as amended. Tinubu referenced his previous correspondence dated August 2, 2023, and stated his resolution to withdraw Dr. Maryam Shetty’s nomination.

In the letter, Tinubu expressed his pleasure in nominating Dr. Mariga Mahmud and Mr. Festus Keyamo for consideration by the Senate. He sought the Senate’s approval to confirm these nominees as ministers, highlighting their potential to contribute significantly to the development and governance of the nation.

President Tinubu concluded the letter by conveying his highest regard to the Distinguished Senate President and all distinguished Senators. He hopes that his request will receive their kind consideration and approval.

The nomination of Mr. Festus Keyamo, a prominent lawyer and human rights activist, signals the possibility of a dynamic and experienced addition to the Federal Executive Council. If approved, Keyamo’s expertise may prove instrumental in addressing legal and social justice matters in the country.

As for the replacement of Dr. Maryam Shetty with Dr. Mairiga Mahmud, the implications are yet to be fully known. However, the change indicates that President Tinubu is carefully considering the composition of his cabinet to ensure an effective and diverse team to tackle the nation’s challenges.

As the Senate reviews these nominations, the nation eagerly awaits the outcomes, anticipating the potential impact of the new ministerial appointees on Nigeria’s governance and future progress.
