Tinubu bars FG officials with no direct participation in UNGA from travelling

A post on Punch official Twitter handle reads that President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to halt the processing of visas for all government officials wishing to travel to New York for the United Nations General Assembly without evidence of direct participation in the UNGA’s official schedule of activities, the Presidency announced on Monday. This is part of a larger effort to lower the cost of governance in Nigeria.

The US Mission in Nigeria has been instructed on how to process official visas in order to prevent any sharp practices, and the Permanent Mission of Nigeria in New York has been further instructed to stop and prevent the accreditation of any government officials who are not included on the protocol lists provided by the approving authority.

By this order of the President, all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies are required to ensure that all officials, who have been approved for inclusion in the UNGA delegation, tightly limit the number of aides and associated employees participating in the event.

In this regard, excesses or abnormalities will be eliminated where they are found during the final verification process.

The President wishes to affirm that, moving forward, government officials and government spending must reflect the caution and sacrifice being made by well-meaning Nigerians throughout the country.
