The President Should Be Careful Not To Be The New Apprentice For French Neo-Colonialism- Shehu Sani

Civil rights advocate and former Kaduna lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has advised the President not to turn into a willing tool for Western interests in the West African sub-region in the wake of the Bola Tinubu administration’s decision to cut off power supply to the Niger Republic as part of the ongoing sanctions against the neighbouring country’s recently erected military junta.

Sani, a well-known leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged the President in a tweet published on his verified Twitter account on Sunday, August 6. Sani urged the President to use the situation in Niger to work for an independent West African region free of western influence rather than to give in to demands from foreign powers.

Nigeria shouldn’t be West Africa’s imperialism’s watchdog, he said. The President should take care to avoid becoming our sub-region’s new apprentice for French neo-colonialism.

Sani’s comments have, in an intriguing development, elicited a wide range of contradictory responses from Nigerians online.
