The Government, Senate, The Riigikogu, And The Constitutional Court Are Dissolved – Gabon Soldiers

According to Vanguard, dozens of Gabonese soldiers appeared on television on Wednesday to announce the end of the current regime and annul an election in which official results showed President Ali Bongo Ondimba had won.

AFP journalists heard gunfire in Gabon’s capital, Libreville, during the report.

 

One of the soldiers, announcing the cancellation of the results, said that “all the institutions of the republic” had been dismantled.

We have decided to protect the peace by ending the current regime,” one of the soldiers told Gabon 24 television, adding that he was speaking on behalf of the “Committee for Institutional Transition and Restoration”. 

Thus, the general elections held on August 26, 2023, and the cut-off results will be cancelled,” he added. “All the institutions of the republic are dissolved: the government, the senate, the Riigikogu, and the constitutional court”, he added, announcing the closure of the Gabon borders “temporarily”. 

Among the soldiers were the Republican Guards as well as soldiers and policemen of the Cadre Army.

The statement was also broadcast on public television, Gabon 1. AFP journalists heard gunfire in several districts of Libreville during the statement.

The announcement came shortly after the Gabon National Electoral Office announced that President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who has ruled for 14 years, won a third term in Saturday’s election with 64.27 percent of the vote. According to the results, Ali Ondimba Bongo’s main rival, Albert Ondo Ossa, obtained only 30.77 percent of the votes.
