Subsidy removal: Tinubu writes Reps, seeks N500bn for palliatives

In a letter to the National Assembly, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked for a change to the 2022 supplementary appropriation Act that would allow the Federal Government to obtain N500 billion as a palliative to lessen the impact of subsidy elimination.

According to PM NEWS, the letter, which Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read aloud at Wednesday’ s plenary, claimed that the money would come from the N819. 5 billion supplementary Appropriation Act for 2022.

In part, the letter states: ” I write to request the House of Representatives’ approval of an amendment to the 2022 Appropriations Act that complies with the law. In order to raise the money for the necessary palliatives to lessen the impact of Nigeria’ s recent suspension of fuel subsidies, the request has become imperative.

The 2022 appropriation act of N819. 536 only included the sum of N500 billion for the distribution of palliatives to Nigerians to lessen the impact of the elimination of gasoline subsidies. I anticipate that the request will be quickly considered by the House.

In response to the President’ s letter, Speaker Abbas guaranteed that the issue would be discussed by the House during its plenary meeting on Thursday and urged participants to be ready to offer their input.

The demand for N500 billion in pain relievers is being made amid rising popular resentment over the recent elimination of the fuel subsidy. The price of gasoline has increased as a result of the subsidy’ s elimination.

The administration has defended themselves, claiming that eliminating the subsidy is essential to generate savings and draw in investment.
