Presidential Election: US court dismisses Atiku’s petition seeking Tinubu’s Chicago academic records

A US court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar seeking the academic records of President Bola Tinubu.

According to Vanguard, the US District Court for Cook County, Illinois, dismissed the suit.

Tinubu said he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Chicago State University.

Beverly Poindexter, who is responsible for requesting transcripts, enrollment, and verifying degrees, confirmed early this year that Tinubu attended the university from 1977 to 1979.

However, Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, has claimed that the president’s academic credentials are fake.

Recently, the former vice president filed a lawsuit asking the university to produce Tinubu’s academic records.

Mr. Atiku, through his lawyer Angela Liu, requested documents relating to Mr. Tinubu’s admission and acceptance to the university, dates of attendance, and the degrees, awards, and decorations he received at the university, among other things.

However, he withdrew the subpoena before the hearing date.

In an order issued on 31 July, Patrick Heneghan, presiding judge of the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois, dismissed the case after the withdrawal.

“The plaintiff’s action in this case has been withdrawn, and Chicago State University will therefore not be heard on the claim filed in this case,” the judge ruled.

“The case is dismissed without prejudice and will resolve all issues pending before the court.”
